Asha, that episode of In Being is one of my all time favorites for the many reasons you recounted but also puzzles + podcasts have become my perfect island (or anywhere) afternoon 💛

thank you for bringing the richness of the full conversation back to me today ~

Thank you for this rich piece of writing. I keep wondering how we maintain integrity and connection in the society that is emerging. How do we nurture each other? What is community? It takes just about all I've got to care for my family--aging parents, disabled sibling, struggling young adult children. I want to build a wider community for us, but my resources feel quite limited, and our structures don't support connection. Not giving up on it, though, and I appreciate this thoughtful piece and how it helps me not turn away from the questions.

My friend sent me a beautiful video clip of Fred Rogers talking about how much appreciated people who allowed him silence and wonder. I will post it if I find it!

Like Nick, I also get energy from the shop, both my own and by being a leader in local Repair Cafés, https://www.repaircafe.org/en/. The repair scene is a great way to help build community, at the same time that it keeps things from going to the dump. Also, I find that trying to fix peoples' random broken treasures is a great reminder to approach challenges with humility, as a "student". The "mansplainers", male and female, are NEVER the best fixers.

What's not to like about doing good and having fun at the same time!!

Beautiful thinking and writing. Thank you for sharing. So glad you are tending your garden. I love the pic of your dad—I remember him well xoxo

So appreciated, Asha, thank so much for your generous thought and writing. I was just talking to another writer about how we want and need each other in spaces like this, so when we can gather around words, it’s a tending of sorts. It’s a garden of sorts.

I found this such a thoughtful reflection—thank you! As some kind of nomad, I don't have a garden. So the idea of just "nurturing where you" are appeals to me. The garden I go to is a small local botanical garden, which is a perfect place for appreciating the passing of the seasons. Nurturing it, for me, means entering that space with appreciation and respect.
