Well said; thank you. The older I get my sphere of influence shrinks to the small group of people (my wife, daughters, grandsons, and about 20 close friends) whom I can love practically every day. Perhaps our societal fixation on “making our lives count” or leaving a legacy is fundamentally flawed because we base this on numbers.

I’m more and more content with the small breadth but great depths of my loves.

Letting go of the idea that I need to do great big great things has been life-changing in the best way. It's allowing me to do more good things than I did when I was trying to save the world. And I'm happier, too. Win-win. The question I always ask now (when I feel competing needs/wants) is: What is most important? It's usually some way of being with someone, rather than some task that feels important but really isn't.

When my kids were small and all they really wanted was to have me sit next to or under them while they did the things they were interested in doing I was only able to give into it my thinking of it as the Ministry of Being With. I think there's something to be said for that Ministry no matter who needs it.

I so appreciate this post. It echoes so much of what I experience as reality. Those small, lovely, well done things can mean so much to us and others and it is so easy to forget. Thanks for the reminder.

I pray, send me someone to serve today. This seems to get me out of my self centered mindset.
